Steven Harris Bsc Dip Arch ARB RIBA(he/him)

Steven is an independent energy efficiency and renewable energy advisor and Architect. He works with public and private clients to convert complex energy and energy efficiency proposals into understandable terms and concepts, and helps find the real world benefits to people, and companies.


He is the Technical and Policy Director for Energence, a Partner in the Architectural Practice CRSH Architects, and a member of the Building Regulation Advisory Committee for Wales (BRACW). In recent years he has particularly focused on delivering deep level energy retrofit projects for private clients (via CRSH) and Planning Policy consulting for the London Boroughs of Ealing and Greenwich (via Energence).


Prior to forming Steven Harris Ltd. he was the Head of Low Carbon Technologies for the Energy Saving Trust. Here he worked with deep level technical advice and interpretation of field trail results for public and industry dissemination. In particular he oversaw the UK Heat Pump Trial


He has been a Director of Abergavenny Energy CIC, was a fellow of the Centre for Refurbishment Excellence (CoRE), and has sat on several Government and Industry Advisory and steering groups including the Zero Carbon Hub, the Microgeneration Certification Scheme, the Carbon Compliance Standards Group (Zero carbon definition), The ETI Strategic Advisory Group and several Smart Technology and Metering Groups. He has also been a member of several BEIS (DECC) consultation groups.


Over the last fifteen years, Steven and his wife Catherine, have designed, funded and constructed a zero carbon family house where they now live. This has equipped him with hands on experience of energy efficiency, microgeneration and monitoring technologies from both the householder’s and ‘on the tools’ installer’s point of views. In 2013 the house was shortlisted for the National Eisteddfod Gold Medal in Architecture and in 2014 won Best Eco Home in the 2014 Daily Telegraph / Homebuilding and Renovating awards.


For ten years Steven worked with Bill Dunster at the Architectural practice ZEDfactory. He was a founding member and was instrumental in the multi award winning Zero Carbon Development BedZED in South London.


As Technical Director he oversaw many further zero carbon buildings and was a contributing author of the practice’s books, ‘The ZED book’ and ‘A to ZED’. He was also responsible for the supply chain company ZEDfabric which designed, manufactured and imported renewable energy equipment. While at ZEDfactory he was involved in the development of the Code for Sustainable Homes and Zero Carbon Stamp duty exemption.


Between 1994 and 2000 Steven worked at Hopkins Architects, most notably as package Architect for the facade of Portcullis House (MP offices).


Steven has also been a Senior Lecturer in Environment and Energy at the University of East London School of Architecture and has lectured at The Welsh School of Architecture.
